Stoke 2-1 Shrewsbury

City booked their place in the 3rd round of the Carling Cup after defeating Shrewsbury by two goals to one at the Britannia Stadium.

A strong Potters side went through thanks to first half headers from Tuncay and Jonathon Walters.

City dominated from the start and Tuncay had an early effort deflected wide, aswell as another shot saved, Etherington went close from the edge of the box and Tonge forced Neal into a good save from 25 yards.

The pressure was to pay off though when Etherington broke down the left and crossed for Walters to nod in at the near post and open the scoring, and his Potters account, even though he did have a header cross the line against Spurs at the weekend.

Tuncay was in fine form and doubled the advantage when another Etherington cross saw the Turkish star guide his header across goal and inside the far post. The lead was nearly added too again before half time but Tuncay's 25 yard shot forced Neal into another fine stop.

The second half started the same way as the first had played out with Pugh twice going close and Tonge also testing the keeper before Shrewsburys first real effort of the day was saved by Nash.

The visitors were giving it a go and Nash fumbled a low cross into the box before grabbing the loose ball but couldn't do anything a minute later as Leslie got in front of Shawcross at the back post and headed in to keep the game alive.

City though closed the game out well and Walters chip drifted inches wide in the dying minutes.
