City's academy side came back from the long trip to the North East empty handed, and out of luck after being defeated by a Sunderland side who are going for a fourth straight U18 title.

A youthful Stoke side, mostly made up of first year scholars and U16 players, competed well but were undone by a tody move before the break and an unfortunate own goal after half time.

The own goal happenned when a 30 yard rocket hit the post and struck defender Zak Foster before bouncing back towards the goal and crossing the line.

City now sit 9th in the league, seven points off top spot, and have eight games left with seven at home and just one trip, to Huddersfield, left this season.

The Potters next game is at home to West Brom on Wednesday, ko 1pm, and then they host Nottingham Forest on Saturday, 11am.
