Stoke had been held to a 1-1 draw by Newport County on Saturday, but a younger Potters side had no such problem 24 hours later.

Marshall scored the opener after 18 minutes and doubled his tally on the half-hour mark following a pass from Matthew Lund, who was his partner in attack.

John Pardue pulled one back for the hosts with a superb 30-yard effort five minutes before half-time but Lund restored Stoke's two-goal advantage within 90 seconds with a close-range header.

Arismendi increased the lead with two well-struck goals after the interval before Rory Delap, on as a substitute, made it 6-1 three minutes from time.

Carlo Nash then saved a last-minute penalty from Niall Yeates. Nash played the entire 90 minutes with Thomas Sorensen again failing to make an appearance.

New signing Jonathan Woodgate is expected to make his debut for the club against Newcastle Town on Wednesday or Brentford on Friday.

Stoke XI: Nash; Wilkinson, Shotton, Collins, Dickinson; Soares, Diao (Delap 61), Arismendi, Tonge (Pugh 74); Lund, Marshall (Shawcross 74).
