Collins has been out of the international fold for the past three-and-a-half years, but his recent form has impressed temporary boss Brian Flynn.
The 30-year-old centre-back is set to be called up for Wales' crucial matches against Bulgaria and Switzerland during the next fortnight.
Wales kicked off their qualifying campaign with the 1-0 defeat in Montenegro which forced the change of manager.
Collins was originally frozen out of the set-up following a difference of opinion with John Toshack.
However, Flynn is expected to recall the former Sunderland man following a string of impressive displays since he ousted Danny Higginbotham from the starting XI after Stoke's opening-day defeat at Wolves.
Flynn was at Stoke's training ground recently, and Collins revealed: "I spoke to him while he was here and everything was OK.
"He asked me if I had retired. I said 'no' and he said 'fine'.
"I'd love to play for Wales again. When I last did it was as left-back, but I'll have to wait to see where he wants me to play."
Collins underlined his decent form with a solid display during Sunday's 2-1 victory at Newcastle.
"It's been nice to be part of a team going on a bit of a run," Collins added.
"We're not playing great, but we're grafting results out."
