Earlier this week, Rio Ferdinand got the football world talking about a Manchester United versus a Premier League All Stars game, which went down a storm on Twitter and TEAMtalk.

We caused a stir with our selections as we picked men who had great campaigns last season, rather than selecting on name and reputation.

But it also got us thinking about a more mouth-watering game which would involve hated rivals joining forces for the greater good of our entertainment.

We're talking about a Premier League All Stars North v South showdown.

It has often been rumoured that one of the reasons why England so often fail to click is because of the divide in the camp between the Northern boys and the Southern contingent, with John Terry's attempted coup against captain Steven Gerrard in South Africa last summer giving weight to the argument.

So let's give them the chance to decide, once and for all, who is the best by pitching the cream of the crop against each other.

This time there are no rules. You can pick as many players from one team as you want, but this is a game we'd like to see happen so you must select current Premier League footballers, meaning the likes of Gary Neville and Paul Scholes are unavailable after hanging up their boots.

We're looking for two 'Harlem Globetrotter' line-ups, to be managed by Sir Alex Ferguson (North) and Arsene Wenger (South), so it's a chance to pick your absolute dream teams.

We'll bunch the Midlands clubs in with the Northern pool of players (as we all know southerners think anything above Watford Gap is the North), so have a look at our editor and deputy editor's selections, then pick your own 22 stars using our add comment facility.

(And just to mix it up a bit and emphasise the depth of talent in the Premier League, Jon's contributed two North and South teams comprised of players not used by Si and James...)
