Stoke fail with Brynjar bid

With John Eustace still on the sidelines, Pulis has been scouring the nation to find a short-term replacement. Few would have expected Brynjar Gunnarsson to be on the list but it seems Joe Kinnear was not prepared to let the Icelandic international go out anyway.

Tony Pulis has revealed to the Sentinel however, that Gunnarsson was only one of four players he is looking at to bring in on loan. He said: ""I've got no problem with taking Brynjar back short-term because he was a good professional and I know he could do a job for us.
"But he was only one of four options and we are still pursuing the others as cover for John Eustace."

Gunnarsson, still the Potters record signing for £600,000 back in December 1999 made 158 times for Stoke and played a big part in the promotion to the first division. However, since leaving he has made just 14 starts for Forest and would have fancied the chance of first team football.

Whether the fans would have taken to Gunnarsson is another matter. He was fairly popular during his time in the Potteries but always had his critics and many people condemned him for looking to leave the club in the Summer.

Having said this, Stoke are short of options in midfield and the Icelander would have done a job for sure. Tony Pulis will now have to look at his other options to see who he can bring in, hopefully before Saturdays tough trip to Reading.

Eustace is still recovering from his injury and Saturdays match will come too soon for him, although Pulis hopes he will be back in time to face second placed West Brom a week on Saturday.

Neil Cutler on the other hand is set to spend upto five weeks on the sidelines after sustaining a deep gash above his ankle during Saturdays win.
