Stoke City 2 Rochdale 1 - Carling Cup Round 1

Last updated : 20 August 2003 By Rob Stanway
Stoke started with a side much weaker than they have been playing so far this season. There was no Carl Asaba, Girfton Noel-Williams, Henry was in place of Andrews and Andy Wilkinson was drafted into defence as Marteinsson and Williams were both unfit. Marc Goodfellow also started.

As always, the lower team was up for it - and Rochdale certainly worked their socks off but overall you could see the quality of football from Stoke above the hardworking team spirit of Rochdale.

Stoke didn't take long to score, Wayne Thomas crossed for Chris Iwelumo who netted with a header after only 13 minutes. Big Chris almost added a second with another excellent header which hit the cross bar soon after.

Chris Shuker had an excellent opportunity having found a huge gap in City's defence but Marcus Hall was on call with a racing slide tackle to block any possible effort.

But, Rochdale did equalise - the team spirit paid off and in the 76th minute - a cross from ex-potter Paul Connor was headed in from 6 yards by Townson.

But a piece of genius from young star Kris Commons saved the day in injury time. He dribbled through the defence and once through, his shot hit the post - bouncing out to Marc Goodfellow, who was in the right place at the right time to add to his goal tally!
