Premier League relegation battle- Who will beat the drop

Last updated : 02 March 2011 By Daily Mail

Hands up, at the start of the campaign who really thought Blackpool would be four points outside the bottom three with 10 games to go?

In fact, who thought any of the promoted sides would be clear of the bottom three?

It's been a totally unpredictable season in the Premier League which has seen a relegation battle have more twists than even Chubby Checker could handle.

But as we enter the time of season which Sir Alex Ferguson would call 'squeaky bum time', Sportsmail is willing to put its head on the block and give its verdict on the winners and losers in the battle to beat relegation.

?

HOW THEY WILL FINISH...11th Stoke - 47 pointsStoke's home form alone means they will be safe from any potential relegation battle but picking up points on the road has been more than a struggle this season. As such Tony Pulis' side will not be troubling a Europa League place but will also be as safe as houses come May.

West Ham (a) 0-2 L

Arsenal (h) 0-2 L

Manchester City (a) 0-1 L

Wigan (h) 2-0 W

Heads up: Rory Delap scores for Stoke against West Brom on Monday

12th Aston Villa - 46 pointsAt their lowest ebb this season Villa were in big trouble near the bottom of the table, but after bringing reinforcements in January, now have far too much strength to go down. In fact only a blip at the end of their season will deny the West Midlands side a place in the top 10.

Bolton (a) 1-2 L

Wolves (h) 2-1 W

Everton (a) 2-2 D

Newcastle (h) 2-1 W

West Ham (a) 1-1 D

Liverpool (h) 2-3 L

Happy days: Stewart Downing celebrates his goal during Aston Villa's win against Blackburn last weekend

13th Birmingham - 42 pointsA Carling Cup hangover sees Birmingham pick up points but hardly any wins as the season draws to a close. They could still go down on the final day, but a win against a Tottenham side already guaranteed to finish fifth ensures that Europa League matches against Juventus will not be followed by away trips to Bournemouth.

West Brom (h) 1-1 D

Everton (a) 0-0 D

Wigan (a) 0-1 L

Bolton (h) 1-1 D

Blackburn (a) 1-2 L

Sunderland (h) 1-0 W

Newcastle (a) 0-1 L

Fulham (h) 0-0 D

Tottenham (a) 2-1 W

Finest hour: Birmingham boss Alex McLeish celebrates Carling Cup glory at Wembley - and he should guide the Blues to safety too

14th Fulham - 41 pointsA mixed bag of fixtures to end the season for Mark Hughes' side, who hit the 'magic 40 points' mark with a home win against Liverpool before securing survival a week later at Birmingham. It's just as well, as they get tanked a week later by an Arsenal side bidding to win the title.

Blackburn (h) 3-1 W

Everton (a) 0-1 L

Blackpool (h) 1-2 L

Manchester United (a) 1-4 L

Bolton (h) 0-0 D

Wolves (a) 1-2 L

Sunderland (a) 1-1 D

Liverpool (h) 2-1 W

Birmingham (a) 0-0 D

Arsenal (h) 0-3 L

Crucial point: Damien Duff scores Fulham's equaliser against Manchester City last weekend

15th Blackpool - 41 pointsSix homes games in the run-in should be an advantage for the Seasiders but they often struggle in front of their home fans. Their next few games will be their best chance of staying up as late season visits to Manchester United and Tottenham look set to end in tears, and lots of them.

Chelsea (h) 0-2 L

Blackburn (a) 3-2 W

Fulham (a) 2-1 W

Arsenal (h) 2-2 D

Wigan (h) 1-2 L

Newcastle (h) 1-2 L

Stoke (h) 1-1 D

Tottenham (a) 2-4 L

Bolton (h) 1-1 D

Manchester United (a) 0-5 L

It's going down to the wire: Ian Holloway's Blackpool face a fight to stay up

16th West Ham - 40 pointsAn unbeaten home record in the final few games proves to be the tonic that makes the Hammers only the second side to be bottom at Christmas and go on to retain their Premier League status. Despite a late rally of consecutive home wins to secure their dramatic escape, Avram Grant still remains poker face after their final day survival against the Black Cats.

Stoke (h) 2-0 W

Tottenham (a) 1-2 L

Manchester United (h) 1-1 D

Bolton (a) 1-1 D

Aston Villa (h) 1-1 D

Chelsea (a) 0-2 L

Manchester City (a) 0-3 L

Blackburn (h) 2-1 W

Wigan (a) 0-1 L

Sunderland (h) 1-0 W

Threesy does it: Carlton Cole scores West Ham's third goal against Liverpool last Sunday

17th Wigan - 40 pointsRock bottom going into the final 10 games, the home game against West Ham in their penultimate game of the season is effectively their 'cup final'. With an unattractive team bringing in nowhere near Premier League attendances, keeping the Latics up would make Roberto Martinez one of the managers of the season.

Manchester City (a) 0-3 L

Birmingham (h) 1-0 W

Tottenham (h) 0-2 L

Chelsea (a) 0-3 L

Blackpool (a) 2-1 W

Plenty to ponder: Wigan boss Roberto Martinez

RELEGATED18th Wolves - 38 pointsDespite a favourable run-in, four consecutive defeats put Mick McCarthy's side in deep trouble. Nine points from their last five games is not enough as a final day draw against Blackburn takes them and Rovers down, when a win would keep either side up on goal difference.

Tottenham (h) 1-1 D

Aston Villa (a) 1-2 L

Newcastle (a) 0-2 L

Everton (h) 1-2 L

Stoke (a) 1-2 L

?Fulham (h) 2-1 W

Birmingham (a) 1-1 D

West Brom (h) 1-0 W

Sunderland (a) 1-1 D

Blackburn (h) 2-2 D

Crucial points: Matt Jarvis scores his first goal as Wolves easily beat Blackpool last weekend

19th Blackburn 38 pointsSteve Kean's inexperience shows up at the very wrong time as Blackburn's awful away form continues under their new boss. Coupled with unfavourable home games against the two Manchester clubs, Rovers are relegated on the last day as neither they nor Wolves can take advantage of Wigan's defeat to secure survival.

Fulham (a) 1-3 L

Blackpool (h) 2-3 L

Arsenal (a) 0-4 L

Birmingham (h) 2-1 W

Everton (a) 0-3 L

Manchester City (h) 1-1 D

Bolton (h) 1-1 D

West Ham (a) 1-2 L

Manchester United (h) 1-2 L

Wolves (a) 2-2 D

Under pressure: Blackburn boss Steve Kean

20th West Bromwich - 36 pointsA season to forget for Roy Hodgson, who after being sacked from Liverpool can't prevent West Brom from sliding to the very bottom of the table. Hodgson's dreadful away record proves pivotal as a Black Country derby defeat at Wolves takes fate out of their own hands.

Birmingham (a) 1-1 D

Arsenal (h) 1-2 L

Liverpool (h) 1-2 L

Sunderland (a) 1-2 L

Chelsea (h) 0-2 L

Tottenham (a) 1-4 L

Everton (h) 1-0 W

Newcastle (a) 0-2 L
