The news comes as another blow to Stoke, who are desperate to improve their forward line with only loan signing Kenwyne Jones fit to play.

Ormerod was set to join the club on loan but pulled out last minute. John Rudge said: "We thought we'd got a signing from a Premier League side but unfortunately the agent of the player thought he could take him to somewhere else more convenient."

Ormerod told the Wigan Evening Post: Ormerod said: "I have come to a great team which plays great football and where everyone works hard for each other.

"The front two here are the best partnership outside the Premiership without a doubt and I'll just have to get my head down, work hard and see what happens.

"I've watched Wigan a few times on the television and they have a tremendous squad.

"Everyone has quality on the ball and the lads have made me very welcome since I arrived.

"I don't see why we can't get promoted because Wigan are as good as anything I have seen in this league.
