Match ratings v Real Valladolid

Last updated : 08 August 2009 By Dan Buxton
Thomas Sorenson - 7 - No chance with either goal but other than that made some vital saves and looked comfortable

Ryan Shotton - 7 - Never looked in real trouble and showed calmness when on the ball as well as good awareness to clear one effort off line

Danny Higginbotham - 7 - Distribution was better, there wasn't as many angled passes as last season, and defending was solid as ever

Ryan Shawcross - 6 - Quiet night and looked a bit unsure every now and again of what to do with the Spaniard playing just the one up front

A.D. Faye - 6 - Took his goal well and one piece of great footwork got him out of a hole first half. Couple of late tackles that will have to be ironed out this week and amazingly bundled off the ball by manucho for equaliser

Liam Lawrence - 8 - Great delivery from set pieces and unlucky not too get a goal or two with his free kicks. Work rate was superb and hardly put a foot wrong. Man of the Match

Matthew Etherington - 7 - Looked lively and gave full backs a torrid time. Will be hoping to take form into season opener next week

Glenn Whelan - 6 - Not upto his high standards of last season yet and may face a battle for place in the XI next Saturday after largely anonymous display

Dean Whitehead - 7 - Game bypassed the midfield largely but showed a great engine to make many runs into the box, one earning a penalty, whilst also never failing to get back. Eager to close down at every opportunity

James Beattie - 7 - Linked up well with Kitson and can claim assist for penalty. Looked livelier than in previous outings and will be raring to go next week

Dave Kitson - 8 - Great show of determination, grit, skill and finishing as he chased everything, played intelligent passes, showed emotion when things didn't go his way and took his penalty like a twenty goal a season striker. On fire at the minute and a serious contender for Burnley

Substitutes

Ricardo Fuller - 7 - Came on during the calmer second half and was usualy threat, linked up well with Beattie and Lawrence and reaction to one Beattie pass, where Ric didn't read it right, showed he does blame himself...occasionally

Andy Wilkinson - 6 - Looked rusty and shoulder injury has obviously left him behind the pack. Needs a good week's training before next weekend

Rory Delap - 7 - Showed his huge throws off late on and gave his all when pushed up front. Usual physical deisplay during time in more familiar midfield role

Danny Pugh - 6 - Remained strong in the tackle when defending and helped keep the Spaniards at bay. Not much activity with the ball though

Leon Cort - 6 - Very little to do, was the target for Delap's late throws
