Liam Lawrence

Had a good game on his first competitive start for the Irish, setting up Glenn Whelan for the opener, as the Green Army conceded an injury time equaliser in their crunch qualifier at Croke Park.

The following comments were made on the IrelandMAD message board:

paddyblade 'has only played twice for us and done very well on each occassion. He looks for the ball picks the right pass, knows when to go forward and when to track back.Lawerence looks to be an inteligent player who is also good at set pieces. He might start on Wednesday but he could lose out to a fit again Duff.'

BIGGREENBEAR 'Lawrence is a fighter and I like his play. We may have no Andy Reid but Lawrence looks OK to me. I can't fault them last night against some class players like Grosso,Pirlo, and Laquinta'

yapster 'Lawrence is a good prospect'

pauljennings 'Lawrence is a gem a really intelligent player and upset the Italian defence all night. I' rate him as the man of the match'

Glenn Whelan

Has played every game for the Irish during their qualifying run and netted the 25 yard opener as the Emerald Isle were pegged back late on by the reigning world champions Italy. The midfielder was subbed off after 70 minutes, replaced by Martin Rowlands.

It would appear though that the Irish supporters are not too impressed with Whelans inclusion in the side as the following comments were left on the IrelandMAD message board:

paddyblade 'I don't rate Whelan at all.Defintly not international class. He never looks for the ball, never creates a chance for our forwrds, can't pass and can't tackle.I wouldn't pick him in a squad 122 let alone a squad of 22.He got booked last night so he's suspended for Wednesday's match'

edison 'I honestly belive Whelan is only getting into the team because we won't pick Chris McCann. Fair enough McCann is injured now, but he is a better option.'

paddy 'Whelan is a joke and no way international class. any player worth his salt should get a 20 yard shot on target specially when you're unmarked. He never looks for the ball, never creates chances, can't tackle and can't pass as the lads sitting behind me last night said 'great goal but he's still shite' nobody disagreed.'

pauljennings 'Whelan is not up to International football really, but
does do a bit of good work'

Tuncay

Disappointing night for Turkey captain as his sides hopes of qualification ended. A 2-0 defeat in Belguim was played out after earleir events had seen Bosnia wrap up the runners up spot and end any chance Turkey had of reaching the play offs.

Played the 90 minutes and will now have next summer off as he looks to push himself into the Potters XI.

Robert Huth

Wasn't named in the matchday squad as Germany beat Russia 1-0 in Luzhniki to book their place in next summers World Cup finals in South Africa.

Thomas Sorenson

Keeper kept a clean sheet as Denmark booked their passage to next summers World Cup, defeating closest rivals Sweden by a goal to nil to seal top spot.

A goal 12 minutes from time from Jacob Poulsen got the Danes the three points and the City stopper can now look forward to representing his country in South Africa next summer.
