Gudjon Sacked by board

Thordarson, pictured, first brought a consortium of Icelanders together to buy out Stoke City Football Club when the club was on a major downfall. After getting relegated from Division One 4 years ago, the club was still owned at this time by the Coates and Humphreys deadly duo.

The club was doing OK after the appointment of Stoke fan Gary Megson but Gudjon and the new icelandic buyers stepped in and Megson - the only replacement I would be totally happy with - had to be let go to allow Gudjon Thordarson to begin his mission of taking Stoke City to the premiership.

He had 5 years, 2 and a half years later he is sacked. After the defeat at Walsall, alot of the Stoke board wanted him out but many were on his side and the comprimise between all parties was to give Gudjon a contract for one more season. Again it was the playoffs but this time, 2 outstanding victories had Stoke City into Nationwide Division One - in terms of the 5 year plan - this gave Stoke 2 years to still go for the premiership under Thordarson.

The key point in the club's first statement to announce the departure of Gudjon as manager was that he had not appreciated that he had to work within the financial restraints imposed by the club. Gudjon countered this by saying that it was the club who had broken their promises of finance to him since last summer and that they had sold to of his best players without giving him the money to spend on team strengthening.

Gudjon certainly didn't hold back on the subject of Stoke City chairman Gunnar Thor Gislason and pointed out that he had been in football for only just over two years, whereas he himself had been involved for well over thirty years.

After his statement had been read out Gudjon answered some questions from the floor and after being asked if he felt let down or betrayed he replied that he was deserted by some people he had considered to be his friends and allies. It was obvious that this point in particular was one which had clearly affected him.

A statement from the official website reads

"The working relationship between the Board and the current manager is untenable. The manager has not always appreciated the financial constraints within which he has had to work and it is felt by the Board that this situation is unlikely to improve especially given the uncertainty regarding future income from TV rights.

"We would like to place on record our thanks to Gudjon for initially bringing the Icelandic investors together and for his contribution to Stoke City FC overall. We wish him well in the future."
