6th August 1980: Born Chester, England

1998: Starts career at non-league Buckley Town as a striker

December 2001: Signs for Chester City, then in the Conference

2002/3: Has season on loan at Vauxhall Motors where he switches from centre forward to centre back

2003/4: Misses just one game during season, as Chester win the Conference title and promotion to the Football League

September 2004: Scores injury time winner against Macclesfield to secure Chesters first win back in the league

October 2004: Joins Sunderland for six-figure fee

2005: Wins first Welsh cap, currently has 16 caps

May 2005: After 14 appearances he helps Sunderland to Championship title and promotion to the Premier League

2005/6: Used sparingly as Sunderland relegated with record low points

2006/7: Played over 30 games as Sunderland won Championship title again

2007/8: Starts 32 times as Sunderland survive in battle against relegation

May 2008: Wins Fans player of the year award

2008/9: Regular as Black Cats again survive in fight to avoid relegation

January 2009: Signs new two-and-a-half year deal at Stadium of Light

May 2009: Retains Fans player of the year award

July 2009: Named Sunderland captain after Dean Whitehead joins Stoke

August 2009: Signs for Stoke for £2.75m
