Carling Cup Round 2 review (updated)

Last updated : 27 August 2009 By Dan Buxton

The second round has so far been defunct of any major shocks, in fact eighteen Premier League clubs are already in the hat for the 3rd round, with Manchester City yet to play..

It all started on Monday when Sunderland travelled to Carrow Road and brushed aside Norwich by four goals to one.

Tuesday main headline was the warzone that was Upton Park and West Ham needed a late Junior Stanislas goal to force extra time, where two more strikes allowed them to defeat Millwall 3-1. Portsmouth had the easiest night of anybody, defeating Hereford 4-1 at Fratton Park. Blackburn, Birmingham, Bolton and Burnley all had tough assigments away from home but came through with varying degrees of ease.

Hull and Wolves had home victories but whilst the Humbersiders brushed aside Southend 3-1 the Black Country side had a goalless two hours before eventually defeating Swindon in a sudden death penalty shoot out.

All Championship clashes produced wins for Preston, Barnsley, Peterborough, Scunthorpe and Nottingham Forest whilst fellow Championship side Q.P.R defeated League Two Accrington Stanley to progress.

There were two upsets as League One side Leeds beat Championship Watford at Elland Road and League Two Port Vale completed the Sheffield double, following up their 1st round victory over Sheffield United with a victory over steel city rivals Wednesday.

Wednesday saw the Potters open their League Cup campaign and needed extra time and a wonder goal from Dave KItson, his first for the club, to see off Leyton Orient.

Also on Wednesday night Tottenham thrashed Doncaster, Newcastle and West Brom edged seven goal thrillers against Huddersfield and Rotherham. Carlisle eased past Bristol City at Ashton Gate and Cardiff saw off Bristol Rovers. The shock of the night was at Bloomfield Road where Blackpool hammered Premier League Wigan Athletic 4-1.
