Last updated : 12 August 2009 By Dan Buxton
The Potters have, due to their Premier League status, been able to watch this week's Carling Cup 1st round and be able to see what teams make it through to the next stage, where the Potters enter the competition. The Britannia Stadium side, who reached the quarter finals last season, will be seeded for the draw.

Stoke enter along with the 12 other Premier League sides who aren't in Europe, they enter in round three, and Middlesbrough and Newcastle who recieved byes.

Leeds were the first side to win in the first round when they defeated Darlington in front of the Sky TV cameras on Monday night.

Tuesday saw the bulk of the games get played and there were big wins for QPR, Preston, Millwall, Tranmere, Peterborough, Norwich and Reading whilst three ties went to extra time with Watford and Hereford winning through after 120 minutes whilst Ipswich needed penalties to see off Shrewsbury.

Ex-Stoke academy graduate Jimmy Phillips scored his first professional goal after coming on as a sub for new side Burton Albion, who went down 5-1 away at Reading whilst current Potter Ben Marshall, on loan at Northampton, played his second game for the Cobblers but couldn't stop them going down to a 2-0 defeat.

There were a number of giant killings as Rotherham, Port Vale, Accrington Stanley, Hereford and Gillingham all beat sides from a higher division, three of the quintet defeating sides two levels above them.
