5-a-side team thrashed in opener

The StokeMAD 5-a-side team lost their opening game by a heavy margin, as the side, with many last minute absentee's, struggled against top class opposition.

The opening fixture was against the side who top the Division One table and haven't lost a game in four seasons in the league.

A number of players dropped out in the afternoon of the game, for numerous reasons, but the sheer persistance of the duo who were left, Dan Buxton and Dave Capostagno, saw them able to round up three players to make up enough for a game. Quality couldn't be an issue, we just had to get 5 players.

With no subs and against a side who had played together for years, and with players who play for local non-league sides on a Saturday, we were looking at damage limitation from the start and even though our opponents wracked up many, many strikes we were thankful for last minute stand in keeper Mark Roberts, who rushed from a game at a nearby arena, for keeping the score down. Roberts performed that well that he was applauded by the opposition after the game.

The drop outs have a chance to make up for their non-show with three more fixtures to finish this season before the next season of the league kicks in and we are dropped to either the second or, as is likely, third division.
