Born in Telford, Rooney won National School’s U-14 trophy at Molineux, although he began his youth career at Wolves when he was just eight years old. The 19 year old came through Wolves’ academy and captained the Academy side during the 2008/2009 season before suffering an injury which ended his season prematurely. Rooney recovered from the injury and enjoyed a strong season in 2009/2010 where he continued to captain the academy team and even the reserve team on occasion despite the senior players available. Rooney graduated from the Academy at the start of the 2010/2011 season and was offered his first professional contract.
