Oppositions Season Thoughts: West Ham United

Last updated : 17 June 2009 By Dan Buxton
How did your season go? Did West Ham finish where you expected them to?
Lee - Season went pretty well but there's a slight tinge of disappointment that we couldn't hold on to 7th place and get into Europe. We were there for a decent period but we lost some crucial matches towards the end. Saying that, with the change of Manager, the 'Tevez saga' still hanging over us and reported financial troubles I think most would be happy. We finished 10th last season so another mid table finish was expected.

Who was West Ham's player of the year?
Lee - The official award went to Scott Parker. Those also in the running were Green, Upson, Behrami and Neill. Young player of the year went to Jack Collison.

Who were the best players you saw play against West Ham?
Lee - I don't tend to notice the opposition players too much but Gerrard ripped us apart the other week in the 3-0 defeat to Liverpool. I was also very impressed with Wilson Palacios in the game against Wigan and am not surprised he moved for such a big fee.

Which, if any, Stoke players impressed you this season?
Dave - I thought a number of Stoke's players performed better than expected this season.  I think Sorenson was good between the sticks but above all else Abdoulaye Faye was the stand out performer.  He looked very assured at the back, both in the air and on the ground.

What are your thoughts on Stoke City?
Dave - I think you have to give Stoke and Tony Pulis a great deal of credit for managing to survive in the Premiership.  They have played to their strengths all season and stuck to it when things have become difficult.  Granted the style of football isn't always the most attractive but they have managed to stick together, pick up the points and make themselves very difficult to beat.

Where do you need to strengthen this summer?
Lee - We desperately need strikers. This season we lost Ashton to Injury at the start and Bellamy was sold to Man City in January. Carlton Cole has done well but missed crucial games towards the end due to injury which means we were left with David Di Michele and the very unfit Diego Tristan playing all the time. Most believe this is the reason we missed out on 7th place.

Who'll be on their way out?
Lee - Zola has said he wants a smaller squad. I would think we'll be trying to get rid of any or all of the following: Lee Bowyer, Callum Davenport, Nigel Quashie, Di Michele (Loan - will probably go back to Torino) and Julian Faubert.

West Ham's best 11 of the season?
Green
Neill Tomkins Upson Ilunga
Behrami Parker Noble Collison
Cole Bellamy

Lee - I would like to include Dean Ashton and Kieran Dyer but they just haven't played enough games.
