Oppositions Season Review: Wigan

Last updated : 07 June 2010 By Dan Buxton

So how has the season gone in your eyes? Was it better or worse than you expected last August?

Poorly, very poorly. It started well but rapidly went down hill and ended in an humiliation. In terms of position its one place below my prediction of 15th but some of the performances this season have been so insipid it undoes all the good parts of the season. Yes we beat 3 of the "big four" but we also lost by an 8 goal margin twice which is difficult to take.

Who has been your best player over the season? Who has improved the most during 2009/10?

IMO McCarthy has been our best player, just ahead of N'Zogbia, purely on the basis that I was expecting a lot from N'Zobgia and not so much from McCarthy. Too many players went backwards this season and very few improved anything so I will follow what all the coaches have said and give young Lee Nicholls the most improved player tag.

What was the best moment of the season for your side?

The comeback against Arsenal.

What was the game of the season?

The Arsenal game!

If you were manager what would you be doing this summer?

Hiring a defensive coach! There is something inherently lacking from our back-line and maybe a new coach will sort that out.

Where do you see the club going from here?

Down. We need a marked improvement on the performances of last season. We have probably the best squad we've ever had but there is no fighting spirit in them. You look at the side that finished 11th in the first season, it wasn't down to talent, it was down to sheer hard graft and spirit. We're sadly lacking in those departments now!
