Tranmere were a wreck. There passing was awful and their aim was to boot the ball up the field and chase it. That didn't work and City piled on the pressure.
Against the run of play, A corner was won for tranmere and they capitalised as an inswinger came in from Mickey Mellon, Clint Hill rose above the rest and headed in goal number one.
Stoke dominated through till half time.
After half time, Stoke continued their domination but with the odd break by tranmere leading to the odd long-range shot which were all well taken by Ward. Stoke had corner after corner but failed to test the keeper.
The next goal came - again against the run of play. Another Tranmere corner and another goal. Sean Flinn heading from a Parkinson cross from about 17 yards into the top left corner.
A penalty was won after Thorne was used as a step-ladder and stopped from getting to the ball by Steve Yates. Thorne converted the penalty excellently into the top left corner but it was too late for a comeback.
