1st half team

Carlo Nash - 6 - Very little to do but did it well

Rory Delap - 7 - Started a bit iffy but came back well and looked decent on the ball as well as being defensively assured at right back

Danny Pugh - 6 - Looked okay without standing out. Some sloppy play and winger got past him once or twice

Salif Diao - 6 - Started well, got stuck in but gave away numerous fouls for pressing in to the forward

Carl Dickinson - 6 - Had a physical battle with his forward but stuck to his task well and very rarely got beat.

Trialist - 8(Man of the half) - Full of flair, pace, skill. looked comfortable on the ball and put in a couple of decent crosses. Good finish for his goal aswell

Tom Soares - 6 - Annonymous for much of the half before getting involved in the final few minutes. Very little end product though

Matthew Lund - 6 - Tried a few Hollywodd passes to try and catch the eye when simple balls would have been enough. Got back well and battled away in the midfield

Diego Arismendi - 6 - Had a shocking opening fifteen minutes, giving the ball at every opportunity but settled after and looked a more composed player. A few decent passes and strong tackles on show

Ben Marshall - 6 - Was trying too hard to impress. Ran out of room a few times when bombing forward but showed his undoubted class with soem superb deliveries from set pieces.

Michael Smith - 6 - Good start, put himself about but first touch deserted him and he struggled to hold off the big centre halves he was up against. Full of effort and energy though and set up the goal with a looped ball into the box

2nd half

Asmir Begovic - 6 - Had nothing at all to do, bar a couple of clearances after passes back to him

Marc Wilson - 7 - Solid enough, had little to do defensively and got forward well. Composed on the ball and never gave it away

Danny Collins - 6 - Very quiet, didn't have much to do at the back but hardly got forward. When he did his crosses and passing was a bit wayward

Ryan Shawcross - 7 - Strong and dominant at the back to deny the hosts frontmen a sniff of anything

Robert Huth - 7 - Ditto Shawcross

Jermaine Pennant - 8(Man of the half) - Great footwork and final ball throughout. Seems to have picked up where he left off at the end of last season and looks promising

Michael Tonge - 6 - Was quiet out on the left so switched to the right but still failed to see much of the ball. Did hit the post with one close range effort

Glenn Whelan - 6 - Took his goal well but passing was a bit ropey and he got caught in possession a few times

Dean Whitehead - 7 - Got about the field, dominated the midfield and bombed forward when possible. Tried a cheeky chip after a bursting run through the middle but the keeper saved well

Jon Walters - 8 - Linked up superbly with Jones, setting up three goals, and the usual non stop show saw him chase everything as well as get himself a late goal

Kenwyne Jones - 8 - Scored two goals, both good finishes, after being set up by Walters and looks on the ball. Chased down well and his partnership with Walters in now nearing telepathic status, the pair worked fantastically well together
