Former StokeMAD editor Rex Orrin Has Sadly Passed Away

Last updated : 27 August 2010 By Dan Buxton

Rex was editor of this site prior to my involvement, he left to start his own Stoke fans site, but I have known him for many years and tonight, unfortunately, he has lost his battle with cancer. This item is just here to bring peoples attentions to this tragic event and allow those lucky enough to have encountered the cockney Potter to reflect on their experiences.

He was a top, top man. Words will not do him justice but I'll try for those who never had the pleasure of meeting Rex.

He was opinionated, he was stubborn, he was cocky but thats why we loved him. I first had the pleasure of meeting Rex when I was 16, we played a charity football match together between Stoke fans followed by a knees up where Rex was the star, and shortly after that I, needing someone to go to away games with, was taken under his wing and he gave me and a mate a lift, including us in his away day routine.

Those charity games became a regular thing at one time and whether he was reffing or playing the spotlight always seemed to follow him, he was that kind of figure, one that everyone knew and relied on to brighten the day and create the memorable moments which we took and still hold to this day.

Always full of wit, to go with his opinion, he appreciated when he was being ripped but more often than not had a quickfire reply that made you look more stupid than ever. Some people didn't like that, I suppose its how easily offended you get!

I remember him popping round mine and installing a phone line, when I tried to pay he refused to accept anything. May not seem a big thing but at 18 it WAS a big deal to me and it was something mates, REAL mates, do for one another.

A massive TP fan, even during the binary season his support for the gaffer never swayed, and whilst we didn't always see eye to eye on that subject, among others, we never really had a fall out, usually because I bowed to his superior knowledge XD

When I took over this site he made sure I knew he was always on the other end of the phone for any advice or help. He told me the ins and out of the network, everything he knew from his time in charge and, even though he had his own site that rivalled this and the oatcake, he was happy to help me get this site up and running again.

Devoted to his family my condolensces go out to Cheryl, Kirsty and Kieron,

The world will be a poorer place without you my old cockney geezer, make sure your watching over the Bridge tomorrow

RIP Rex Orrin
